Last year, A-1 Scuba and Travel Center near Denver, Colorado launched an innovative program with the Downtown Aquarium to provide divers and snorkelers an opportunity to interact with dozens of rare aquatic creatures in a natural controlled environment.
According to Shane Taylor, the director of the program, “This is an incredible opportunity for anyone who loves the water to do something few people have the chance to do – explore an aquarium. It’s especially unique because we’re here in Denver and there aren’t as many opportunities to dive compared to other areas of the country.”
The pilot program involves two different areas of the aquarium. The first is the Sea of Cortez tank and its 200,000 gallons of water. Taylor says there are more than 30 species of creatures to observe there. The other option is definitely the most popular, the Depth of the Pacific. There participants can scuba dive or snorkel in the midst of multiple species of sharks.
Since the start of the program last year, more than 1,500 excited participants have taken the plunge and experienced the “local waters” of Denver.
Taylor said that some participants, along with staff members, have been doing test dives with Oceanic’s new DataMask. He says the innovative “heads-up” display provides divers with a unique advantage. “It’s a great way to be able to keep your eyes on what’s in front of you and not have to look down at your gauges. We’re fortunate to be able to have several units for divers to test.”
The DataMask is a product A-1 Scuba and Travel Center is looking forward to offering all of its customers, including those at the Aquarium. “At first, some of the staff thought the DataMask was just a gimmick,” Taylor points out. “But after just a couple of dives, most of us are hooked. We can’t wait to dive with it some more.”
