The deadline for applications for the Zale Parry Scholarship is July 31, 2007. So, if you know of one or more qualified candidates, please urge them to apply soon!

Recipients of the Zale Parry Scholarship will receive $1500 plus a $500 voucher towards travel expenses to the Zale Parry Scholarship presentation ceremony which will take place this year at the NOGI Awards GALA on November 1, 2007, at the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando, Florida.

The Zale Parry Scholarship offers financial support to individuals seeking to advance their knowledge or to enter professional careers in one of the following fields:

- Underwater research

- Equipment technology

- Undersea and hyperbaric medicine

- Marine Conservation

The Zale Parry Scholarship is awarded on both merit and financial need. The scholarship is open to male and female divers of any age who are citizens of the U.S. or Canada and who are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university

Zale Parry is an internationally renowned pioneer of the early days of skin and scuba diving. As early as the 1950’s, Parry was an underwater equipment tester and (the only woman) executive at Scientific Underwater Research Enterprises (SURE), founded by her husband, Parry Bivens, who designed and built hyperbaric chambers. In 1954, Parry set a woman’s deep diving record at 209 ft/64 meters in the open sea as part of an experiment to test the Hope-Page non-return valve mouthpiece, which became a standard feature in all regulators from that day forward. Zale was the third female instructor to graduate from the L.A. County UICC program and served for many years as a Red Cross First Aid volunteer. Zale Parry continues to lecture at venues around the United States, she is an outspoken marine conservation advocate and she is writing a multi-volume tome, Scuba America: An Anecdotal History of Diving, to record and preserve the annals of diving.

Zale Parry is the Ambassador at Large for the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences (AUAS, Inc.), and as such, has chosen AUAS to administer a scholarship in her name. By creating the Zale Parry Scholarship, Parry hopes to encourage others to carry on her legacy of ocean exploration, dive equipment technology, hyperbaric medical research and marine conservation.

APPLICATIONS FOR THE ZALE PARRY SCHOLARSHIP CAN BE FOUND AT: WWW.AUAS-NOGI.ORG.
