Reef Check Executive Director Dr. Gregor Hodgson announced today the launch of the Reef Check EcoAction program, a multi-level, interactive education and training program for children and adults that teaches participants all about reef ecology and biology through self-guided learning or with the aid of a certified trainer. The materials will debut at the 2006 DEMA trade show in Orlando.

“Reef Check EcoAction training programs offer dive operators and resort owners the chance to make participation in environmental education financially self-sustaining” said Dr. Hodgson. Industry research indicates that educated and informed divers are frequent divers. Reef Check’s scientifically tested and proven programs are specifically designed keep divers traveling and getting back in the water. Its fun, easy to do and will help make environmental sustainability profitable. Market research shows the program can be sold for a suggested retail cost of up to $350.

Regional instructor trainings will be held in upcoming month in 12 countries around the world. Private trainings can also be for arranged individual shops and instructors. Please contact info@reefcheck.org for specific dates and locations. Resorts and shops can become certified as Reef Check approved facilities as long as they have a Reef Check certified trainer on staff.

The EcoAction program also features more adventure and money-making opportunities with Reef Check EcoExpeditions. Reef Check will be working with dive shops and resorts to send divers and snorkelers to unique destinations around the world with trained RC scientists to study coral reef ecology, local culture and help design and carry out reef rescue plans. It’s a unique program that helps bond divers with specific destinations through the monitoring process. They will come back year after year to see how “their” reefs are doing. With teams in over 80 countries, Reef Check can support travel anywhere.

Reef Check EcoAdventure Program Manager Cori Kane will be giving a complete presentation on the full EcoAction program Thursday at 1:00 in room S310F. Please join us to find out more details on how you can benefit from keeping your reefs healthy.
