hi all,
i'm looking to buy a camera plus housing to take pictures for sale. the budget is limited (around 500 euros for both). any tips in what to look for?
i was thinking 5mpixels or more.
other features? difficult since there's so many of them.
does it have to be manual white balance or will automatic do?
how much optical zoom does one really need underwater or is the macro-feature enough (how exactly do these work together?).
what else should i look for?
the panasonic lumix dcm tz1 won a test in a magazine in this pricerange. it has a picture stabilizer of some sort, and i'm not too sure how it works and wether this is useful underwater...
looking at prices for this one, i stumbled over contemporary sonys with more megapixels and zeiss lenses as opposed to leica in the panasonic.
i'm at a loss, someone please help me out here... Crying or Very sad
planning to use my kowalski for lighting, so flash comparisons are not interesting.

tell you the truth - i cant see that you will get camera plus housing for about 500 euro. most housings are far more expensive than the cameras. but maybe sb has an idea for you.

the panasonic dropped just under 300 euro and the housing costs 180. there were about 15 cameras in that test, so the price isn't the problem...

/edit: just found this baby here http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/ixus750/spe-e.html for 500 euros in a package with housing and a 2gb card. my fingers are ITCHING!
only differences are lack of an optical stabilizer an a no name lens (the panasonic has a leica). opinions please, since this offer is most likely temporary...

/edit2: checked some prices, the cam comes standard for around 280 euros, the housing 170 euro, so the prices isn't THAT good. the 2 gb card can't be that expensive. still, fingers itching!

i'm back to buying the panasonic. i think the picture stabilizer and the leica lens make for better pics than 2 additional megapixels.
nobody want to help me out with a comment or even some inwater experience?

would love to but cant! as for the 2 mp, as long as you dont play with the idea to make very large prints it shouldnt matter much, leica optics are usually very good.

hola,

last week we had a diver who used the ixus 750 with quite reasonable results. even a couple of the makro pics were really good but i am not sure if they were good enough for sale. my "chefe" uses a olympus c-5060 with 5,1 mega pixel and we printed a few of his pics in A3 format. really good quality but i think you wan't get both under 900 euros. if you found a good and cheap solution please let me know....i am also looking for a new camera and don't have that much money to spend. have fund and good luck

while cameras get ever cheaper (one gets the impression on a daily base) and many of the cheaper ones produce actually amazingly good results for what you have, i think you still get what you pay for and if a camera incl. housing for $600 would allow for the same results than more expensive gear - why would anybody buy the expensive stuff!? i know that budget is an issue for many of us and we have to compromize to find the best deal for what we can afford and try to archive.
i personally did not got back into u/w photo since the trunk of my car was broken into about 10yrs ago and my complete (at the time state of the art) nikon gear was stolen (we talk about U$10.000 at the time - including 3 cameras, lenses, flashes, housings etc). i got a meager 2400 back of the insurance afterwards (trust me, i learned sth about insurance for your equipment - just too late for me at the time Sad). anyway, i couldnt really justify to replace all the stuff then (still cant and have more and also expensive interests now) because it never made a fraction of the money back for me, on the other hand - call me spoiled - i am not willing to compromise on gear quality Rolling Eyes. so i guess thats one of the things on my wishlist that has to wait til i win the lotto or get a job again like i had at the time to afford equivalent gear.

well, the topic is postponed until next year.
1 day before i wanted to order the panasonic (in germany 300 euro, housing 180 euro), my friend found something in egypt for videography and he has a camera for me as well, so that's off my mind now. atm i'm hunting for ikelite accesories i know f*** all about -.-
but he's paying for those, so ... Very Happy
osral: check the panasonic dcm tz1. that's what i would've bought. 5mp, leica lens, optical image stabilizer, 10x OPTICAL zoom, and very affordable...
tekmac: sorry about the gear. most likely worth more than the car itself =)
we're not talking national geographic here, just some snapshots to burn on a cd for tourists who know even less about the subject than us (in 99% of the cases) Rolling Eyes
