Ok here is a good one for all the diving docs out there...

My Nephew, is an asthmatic that hasnt ever had an asthma attack, He felt a bit tired so his mum took him to get tested for alergies (thinking hay fever) and suggested that it may be asthma... The doctor did a peek flow test before and after a shot of ventillin and there was a marked improvement 300 to 450!!!

Normally I would say ok... However he has never had an asthma attack never used the ventillin (or preventatives) nor has he any of the usual symptom of asthma, and is a very active kid, that loves to push his physical limits. (running, swimming, bike riding, indoor rock climbing, all sports really)

Now to me this would suggest that perhaps there is either some other issue at the base of the problem or that the asthma is so mild or of a type as not to be an issue to diving.

Alright so what I want to know is... What would we need to do to get a clearance for him to dive??? and what could cause the asthma like symptoms if that is possible.

Thanks in advance

while asthma and diving used to be a big nono - in recent years this rule shifted to diving with asthma yes as long as medical clearance exists.

... but remember what Asthma is: a constriction of bronchiaes / bronchiolaes. A constriction means that there is an air space in the lung(s) that cannot equalize during ascent.
It may very well be that somebody with Asthma is diving for years, decades without problem - but once a problem due to Asthma occurs under water , you're in big trouble!
It is absolutely mandatory to first get clearance from a dive physician!

Thanks all I just wanted some ideas... Asthama is always a dodgy subject. When I started Asthma was a sure fire exception.... But now it depends and this kid REALLY wants to dive. Ive taken him snorkeling heaps and hes so keen.

So thanks again
