August 22, 2006 – San Francisco, California: The Northern California Underwater Photographic Society (NCUPS.org) proudly presents the 42nd Annual International Underwater Photographic Competition, aka: SEA 2006, and the Bob Commer Award of Excellence in Underwater Photography. The "mail-in" underwater photography and videography competition is open to amateur photographers and videographers from around the world. The SEA 2005 competition brought in hundreds of entries from underwater photographers from as far away as Indonesia and South Africa.

The Northern California Underwater Photographic Society, the oldest and most prestigious underwater photography club in the United States, possibly the world, promotes conservationism and environmental protection through the membership’s shared passion in underwater photography and videography. NCUPS has been active since 1957, sponsoring educational events on both underwater photography and video while promoting awareness of the underwater environment and pertinent ecological issues.

Award sponsors of the SEA 2006 competition include scuba ecotourism resorts and travel agencies and scuba and photography equipment manufacturers, including, but not limited to, luxury live-aboards, such as the Pindito - Irian Jaya; the Nai'a - Fiji; the Kararu - Indonesia; Mike Ball Expeditions - Australia; and manufacturers Sandisk and Stormcase.

The Bob Commer Award, named in honor of a founding member of NCUPS and a pioneer in many aspects of underwater photography, held in conjunction with SEA 2006, is open to all photographers, including industry professionals. The winner of the Bob Commer Award receives $500.00 and a handcrafted glass trophy of an underwater photographer. www.ncups.org/commer.html

The SEA 2006 underwater photographic competition will issue awards for the best work in categories including Macro, Wide Angle, and Underwater California categories in digital and 35mm slide; a traditional print category; creative categories in print and digital; and a video category. New for 2006 is the Creative Digital category where entrants are encouraged to use any and all tools available to express their individual creativity.

Entries must be received by October 13, 2006. Winning entries will be announced on the NCUPS website in November 2006. Download Rules and Regulations, and the Entry Form from the NCUPS website http://www.ncups.org
